Just a Pretty Skirt

As you know by now, this whole issue of the hemlines at work has been killing me. It’s funny, isn’t it, once you’re committed to a new fashion rule how wholly it can consume you. I remember when I was first diagnosed with Raynaud’s disease (an autoimmune issue that makes your fingers and toes dangerously cold in winter months). I went on a hunt for mittens and gloves like no girl has ever done before–cashmere, silk, leather, and suede. H&M, Ugg, Barneys… I went everywhere. Mom and I recently sorted through my astonishing glove collection and snickered just a bit, realizing how crazy-fashion-hoarder we can both get at times.

A similar issue with the skirts is happening now. Except that I am broke. So, the long skirts are not as easily acquired as the mittens were long ago when I had no expenses. But I digress. This entirely too long intro is simply to say that I have found my next must-buy, and I wanted to share it with you. Calypso is by far one of my favorite places to go for pretty things. While perusing their sale section online today, I found this amazing skirt. It comes in hazelnut (which, frankly, looks more like pink to me) and this effortlessly chic navy. The draping silk detail and chic ribbon edges are divine; I imagine it floating against the body like a dream. Oh, and they still have most sizes 0-10 available, on sale for $129. Just sayin! Happy Saturday, my little dumplings. And as always, happy shopping!

Fashion Week Begins!

Friends, it is that glittering and wonderful time of year once more. I was reminded of this last night as I passed the editor-only launch for the Missoni for Target pop-up store across from Bryant Park, for which I sadly did not receive an invite this season. I reminded myself, though, that just like everyone else, I will be able to shop the new looks online starting September 13th, or when the pop-up opens to the public tonight at 6 pm (that is, if they have any goods left!).

Other fun things on deck for tonight’s Fashion’s Night Out:

QVC‘s annual 25 to Watch party at the Suspenders Building (428 Broadway at Howard Street). Celeb arrivals and live coverage start at 9 pm EST. Red carpet starlets will include more Kardashians than you can handle, super-model-cum-jewelry designer Heidi Klum, and Anna Wintour herself.

Calypso is doing a champagne and shopping party offering guests 20% off loot, artisan truffles, and live performances at both their SoHo and meatpacking locations.

Bloomingdale’s promises celebrity appearances and great shopping at the Flagship on 59th street.

And Barneys will donate 10% of profits from FNO sales to September 11th causes. Not to mention that the utterly fabulous Linda Rodin will be celebrating her famed Olio Lusso downstairs in the cosmetics department. Stop by for fashion and beauty!

That’s just a few highlights. Check out the official website here for more ideas. Have fun and happy shopping!

Hello, Kelli

Three years ago my dear friend and former colleague Kate introduced me to Calypso. A whimsical Upper-East-Side-Princess-Meets-Boho-Babe brand, I became completely enamored with the raw silks, cool jersey knits, tie dye patterns and bead details that comprised the breezy line. My instant favorite was a dress called Pazzi, a little silk shift that glinted and glimmered in the light, in a rainbow of inspired hues from turquoise to crimson, lavendar to white, black to cobalt and beyond. Universally flattering, the Pazzi makes everyone look tiny in some miraculous way I still haven’t figured out.

The Pazzi in one of several purples. Are you in love?

Kate owned the sheath in two stunning hues and, not to be outdone, I bought three. A shimmering blue-green, a cherry red, and the surprising favorite–crisp white. This was in 2008, and I still rock my seasonless Pazzi’s all the time. In the summer they look great against a tan with some gold sandals. In the fall, they work with a Frye boot. In winter, a pair of thick black tights, pumps, and a cashmere cardigan makes them a go-to. You get the idea. In fact, I see Pazzi’s all over town–from upscale restaurants to subway platforms, on young PR girls, stroller-pushing 30-something’s, and regal women in their 40′s and well beyond.

The best thing about Calypso was that they turned out these signature dresses every season, careful to appeal to their loyal customer but always branching out to bring a new demographic on board. For the past year or so, I’ve been saddened to see the affordable, precious, named little dresses all but disappear. They’ve had a few failed attempts at a revival to these signature looks, but this morning I was thrilled to discover a note in my inbox introducing me to the new Kelli.

The original Kelli in navy lace, calypsostbarth.com, $265

The previously existing Kelli is a cowel-necked, lacy delight with an ever-so-slightly cinched waist that falls just above the knee. Simple and sweet, it’s a crowd pleaser that works on everyone. This morning, Calypso’s mailer announced that Kelli now comes in my old favorite…. Velvet!!

calypsostbarth.com, $385

Yes, my loves, this delicious day-to-night dress is now available in the most cuddly-chic fabric there is. I love the three colors they have now–blue, “malt” (a toffee-tan), and “acai” (a rich, royal purple), but let’s hope they offer even more fun choices come fall. And, while this option is a little pricier than it’s lacy cousin, the beauty of a Calypso dress is that it is not only timeless, but expertly constructed. You will love–and live in–your Kelli for years. Happy clicking!
